What keeps delighting people is how much of the week's cooking ends up in one pot. Owners describe baking bread a couple of times a week, braising meat, making soups, sauces, vegetables, pasta, rice, even eggs and seared steak in it. One owner said that if the kitchen could hold only one piece of cookware, this would be it. Several run it alongside a stack of bare cast iron skillets and still reach for the Dutch oven for anything slow or saucy.
The adjustments are small. A light interior enamel stains easily, which some owners accept because a chip would be obvious right away, while others prefer the black enamel interiors found on some models. Size matters more than people expect: one owner found a small Dutch oven too small, bought a large one, and found that too big. And more than one account admits the collection has grown well past what any kitchen strictly needs.
